How to Quickly Crochet Blankets this Winter

There’s something special about crocheting blankets in winter. Getting cosy on the lounge, feeling the soft wool move through your hands and seeing the blanket grow, stitch by stitch. The love that goes into hand-making blankets is what makes them extra special to snuggle under, and they are the ultimate handmade gift, wrapping your special people in love for many years.

Winter is the perfect time to slow down and enjoy creative projects at home, especially ones that are both relaxing and practical. A handmade crochet blanket not only keeps you warm during the colder months, but also adds beautiful texture and comfort to your home.

The only thing that’s not good about crocheting blankets is how long it takes. Blankets are big, and standard crochet stitches are small, making it a frustratingly slow process that’s prone to being put in the back of the cupboard and forgotten about.

That’s why I love crocheting blankets with super chunky yarns! The stitches are much bigger, needing fewer of them. Super chunky blankets are quick and easy to crochet. It’s even possible to make one in a day.

Why is super chunky crochet quicker?

Smaller yarns create smaller stitches, and bigger yarns create bigger stitches. There need to be lots more smaller stitches to cover the same areas as a couple of bigger stitches.

Super chunky crochet is quicker because the stitches are bigger and there are fewer of them to crochet.

Another reason super chunky crochet feels quicker is that you can see progress immediately. With each crochet session, the blanket noticeably grows, which makes the project feel exciting and motivating to keep going with. Smaller yarns can take many hours before you notice much change, but chunky yarn gives that satisfying feeling straight away.

In the photo below, there are 5 different squares. Each square is crocheted using the same pattern (the same number of stitches and rows) and different-sized yarns.

  • the smallest yarn size (2ply/lace) creates the smallest square that’s 13cm x 13cm (5in x 5in)
  • the largest yarn size (14ply) creates the largest square that’s 33cm x 33cm (13in x 13in)

The same number of stitches in the 14ply yarn covers a much bigger area than 2ply yarn, making the larger yarn quicker to crochet a blanket with.

If we take this a step further and crochet the same pattern with a super chunky yarn, it becomes a 1m x 1m (39in x 39in) blanket! Perfect for snuggling up under! It’s the same number of stitches as the 2ply / lace square up above, but much bigger.

Pinkie, my fluffy white crocheting companion, had to help show how big the super chunky square is! The blue blanket in the 3 photos above is the same blanket.

I’d need to crochet 64 of the 2ply / lace squares to cover the same area as the blanket-sized super chunky square. That means I could make 64 super chunky blankets in the same time as making a 2ply / lace blanket!

An extra tip for quickly crocheting blankets? Start with a crochet kit.

With a crochet kit, it means that someone else has already worked out how much yarn is needed, put together all the tools that are needed and checked that the yarn works with the pattern. The hardest part is done!

All you need to do is get the kit and then start crocheting.

Super chunky crochet is also ideal for beginner crocheters because the stitches are easier to see and count. This makes it much simpler to learn where to place your hook and understand how to crochet. Many crocheters find chunky yarn less frustrating because it is easier to see what to do and because mistakes are easier to spot and fix.

Where do I find kits for crocheting super chunky blankets?

There’s a range of delightful super chunky blankets to crochet in the Homelea Lass Yarn Store that cover a range of sizes from baby blankets to king-size bed blankets.

The Homelea Lass blanket crochet kits include everything that you need, and you can remove any tools that you already have. All you need to do is pick your favourite colour.

Below is a simple guide to help you choose the best super chunky blanket crochet kit to start with.

1. I recommend starting with the Warm Heart Blanket crochet kit to get used to super chunky crochet. It’ll even teach you how to crochet if you’ve never picked up a crochet hook before.

The Warm Heart Blanket is a wonderful first project because it grows quickly and helps build crochet confidence. Finishing a blanket in a shorter amount of time gives beginners a real sense of achievement and encourages them to keep learning new skills.

2. Then move on to the Wrapped In Love Blanket crochet kit to learn how to crochet some new stitches. You’ll master crocheting through the back loop and doing crossed stitches.

This blanket is perfect for crocheters who are ready to try something slightly different while still enjoying a relaxing project. The texture created by the stitches gives the blanket extra warmth and a beautiful, handmade look.

3. The next step is to make the Diamond Blanket crochet kit and master crocheting increases and decreases. This diamond-shaped blanket has linen stitch in the middle, which is one of the most popular crochet techniques.

The Diamond Blanket is a fantastic project for building confidence with shaping techniques while creating a blanket that looks detailed and impressive. It is especially rewarding to watch the diamond shape develop as the blanket grows.

Quickly crocheting a blanket feels amazing to do, especially during winter, and the blanket will be finished before you know it!
