Should I learn to crochet making toys or something else?

There are many different things that can be crocheted – toys, blankets, cardigans, scarfs, baskets and more – but what’s the best thing to make when learning to crochet?

Crocheting is made up of lots and lots of stitches, and once you learn how to do the basic stitches you can make anything. The world is your crocheting oyster!

As a crochet beginner, It’s best to start with a flat, simple shape that is crocheted in straight rows.

Scarfs or blankets are ideal, and you’ll be able to use them too.

Get used to doing the basic stitches this way and become more confident about crocheting, then move onto toys. Toys are generally 3 dimensional and can involve some tricky stitches that may be confusing as a new crocheter.

If you want to make learning to crochet even easier, then start with a chunky yarn and big crochet hook, and add in a beginner’s pattern with video tutorials.

The big yarn and hook are easier to see and control, plus they’re heaps quicker to crochet with. The video tutorials will show exactly what to do. It’s possible for a beginner to crochet a chunky scarf in a day.
