Learn to Crochet: Types of Crochet Stitches

Now that you know how to crochet, it’s time to start learning some basic crochet stitches! Here are a few different types of crochet stitches to get you started:

Chain Stitch

The chain stitch is one of the easiest crochet stitches to learn. It is made by wrapping the yarn around the crochet hook and then pulling it through the loop.

Steps to crochet a foundation chain:

  1. make a slip knot on your crochet hook
  2. insert the crochet hook into the loop
  3. wrap the yarn around the crochet hook
  4. pull the yarn through the loop
  5. make as many chain stitches as you need, and repeat these steps until you have the desired length

Double Crochet Stitch (UK terminology) / Single Crochet Stitch (US terminology)

This is another of the easiest crochet stitches to learn. It is made by inserting the crochet hook into the next stitch, wrap the yarn over the hook and pull it through the loop, wrap the yarn over the hook again and pull it through both loops on the hook.

Steps to crochet a square or rectangle with double crochet stitches (UK terminology) / Single crochet stitches (US terminology):

  1. start by making a chain of stitches. The number of chain stitches you make will determine the width of your crochet fabric
  2. start working in the first stitch. To do this, insert your crochet hook into the first stitch, yarn over and pull it through the loop; then yarn over and pull it through both loops on the hook. You have now made one stitch
  3. continue making a stitch in each stitch across the row until you reach the end. When you reach the end of the row, turn your crocheting and start working back across the row
  4. continue crocheting until you’re happy with the length. To finish off, cut the yarn, leaving a tail, and pull through the last loop on the hook. Pull the tail to tighten the stitch and use a darning needle to weave in the first and last ends.

Treble Crochet Stitch (UK terminology) / Double Crochet Stitch (US terminology)

This stitch is made by wrapping the yarn around the hook first, then inserting the hook into the next stitch below, wrap the yarn around the hook again and pulling it through the loop (there are now three loops on hook), wrap the yarn around the hook and pull it through the first 2 loops on hook (there are two loops remaining), wrap the yarn around the hook for a final time and pull it through the last 2 loops on the hook.

Steps to crochet a row of treble crochet (UK terminology) / double crochet (US terminology):

  1. make a turning chain of 2 stitches (refer to the section on chain stitches up above for how to do this)
  2. yarn over and insert hook into the first stitch of the previous row or foundation chain, yarn over and pull up a loop (three loops on hook)
  3. yarn over and pull through the first 2 loops on the hook (two loops remaining)., yarn over and pull through the last 2 loops on the hook
  4. repeat these steps until you reach the end of the row

These are tall stitches, and because of this, crochet projects made with this stitch will work up quickly.

This stitch is often used in afghans, baby blankets and shawls. It is also a crochet stitch that is used in crochet lace.

Half Treble Crochet Stitch (UK terminology) / Half Double Crochet Stitch (US terminology)

This crochet stitch creates an interesting texture.

Steps:

  1. make a turning chain of 1 stitch (refer to the section on chain stitches up above for how to do this)
  2. wrap the yarn around the hook and then put the hook through the stitch below
  3. wrap the yarn around the hook again and then pull it back out of the stitch below (there are 3 loops on the hook)
  4. wrap the yarn around the hook for a final time and pull it through all through loops on the hook
