Foundation Chain

It all starts with the foundation chain. It is the base for the other stitches to be crocheted into.

Start with a slip knot on the crochet hook. This means there is one loop on the hook.

To make a single chain stitch, wrap the yarn around the hook and pull it through the loop on the hook. It really is that simple! Repeat this step to make multiple chain stitches.

A common beginner mistake is to make the chain stitches too tight. The loop needs to be able to move easily along the hook, with some extra space. Don’t pull tightly on the yarn.

Double Crochet Stitch (US terminology) or Treble Stitch (UK terminology)

This stitch is used a lot in crocheting and is made up of all the basic elements of a crochet stitch.

Start with a slipknot and make the foundation chain with the number of stitches you’d like to have in your crocheting. Do another 2 chain stitches to be the turning chain and to get the crocheting up to the top of the row.

Next, wrap the yarn around the hook (this is called a yarn over), and then put the hook through the third chain away from the hook (this skips the 2 chain stitches in the turning chain). Yarn over again and pull the hook back out of the third chain. This links the stitch into the previous stitches.

Yarn once more and pull your hook through the first two loops on the hook. After that, yarn over one last time, and pull your hook through the remaining two loops on the hook. Your stitch is now complete.

Keep repeating this stitch along the foundation chain, only instead of putting the hook through the their chain, put the crochet hook into the next foundation chain stitch.

Half-Double Crochet Stitch (US terminology) or Half-Treble Stitch (UK terminology)

This stitch is similar to the Double Crochet (US terminology) or Treble (UK terminology) stitch up above. It starts the same – yarn over and put the hook into the next stitch below, then yarn over and pull the hook out of the stitch below.

It is then different because the next yarn over is pulled through all 3 loops on the hook. This is the end of the stitch.

It is quicker to do because there’s not as many steps, and as a result the stitch is shorter.

Front Post Double Crochet Stitch (US terminology) or Front Post Treble Stitch (UK terminology)

Of the crochet techniques included in this article, this is the most complicated and creates a 3D texture in the crocheting. However, if you think of it as just a Double Crochet (US terminology) or Treble (UK terminology) stitch that is crocheted around the stitch below, it is still simple to do.

Start off by doing a yarn over, and then instead of putting the crochet hook into the top of the stitch below, place the hook horizontally underneath the post (or body) of the stitch below.

Then continue with the stitch by doing a yarn over again and pull the hook back out of the crocheting.

Yarn once more and pull your hook through the first two loops on the hook. After that, yarn over one last time, and pull your hook through the remaining two loops on the hook.
